Students with special learning needs and physical disabilitiesThis resource has been developed for students with special learning needs and physical disabilities. It can be used on its own or in conjunction with the I.M.P.S. programme.

Topics include:

  • Safer strangers
  • Home safety
  • Road safety
  • The recovery position

Specialised picture communication symbols are incorporated into lesson plans.

Taking part in a special needs programme

Most I.M.P.S. centres can adapt the practical session according to the needs of your students. Please contact your nearest centre to discuss your requirements.

As always the ladies were fantastic at the I.M.P.S training and the group worked really well and enjoyed it. I really appreciate the hard work that you all put in to make I.M.P.S possible I think it is such a great course and that all students should take part. I am really grateful that you are able to adapt it for my year 10 students as it teaches such vital life skills to them.

Rhodri's story

Rhodri makes the call

Rhodri Jones who is 13 years old and a pupil at Woodeaton  Manor Special School called 999 after he found a man collapsed at a bus stop.
Rhodri, who often finds speaking difficult, remembered being taught what to do in an emergency and called for an ambulance.
He went through the I.M.P.S.  programme three years ago, at St Michaels Primary School in Marston before starting at the special school Woodeaton Manor.
Rhodri has autism spectrum disorder and finds social interaction difficult.
His mum, Jill said, ‘under normal circumstances he would find it very hard to talk to anybody and he would find it quite stressful.  This is a little chap who has real difficulties, but he remembered what to say and it was  a really brave thing for him to do.  I’m really proud of him.’
