Sunderland I.M.P.S.
Sunderland I.M.P.S. was started by Sunderland Primary Care Trust (PCT) in 2000. Unfortunately, due to reduced funding streams, the programme was facing suspension in 2006.
A partnership was formed between Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS), St John Ambulance and Sunderland PCT in September 2006, which allowed the scheme to continue for a further scholastic year. Funding for the IMPS facilitators was provided by Sunderland PCT, management, support, admin and training by TWFRS and first aid training, follow on school programme and certificates by St John Ambulance.
At the onset of the new partnership evaluations and research was done as to the effect and impact of the existing IMPS scheme. Although it was mostly favourable this work did show that the prevention work done in school was weak. The partners addressed this by extending the programme. After the hospital visit, St John Ambulance continue the Emergency First Aid instruction in a school visit. Upon completion of the syllabus the children achieve the Young first aider award. This is a nationally recognised certificate which is valid for three years, the children are encouraged to use the certificate in senior school to start their 'Record of Achievement'.
The final part of the programme is held during the summer term when all of the schools are invited to attend Safety Works! to take part in interactive safety sessions especially created for the IMPS programme. These sessions are designed to encourage children to make decisions based on the risk involved and to allow them to use the new first aid skills in realistic role play using drama. Safety Works! is a multi agency organisation which has Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service as its Lead Agency.
During the scholastic year 2006-07, 47 primary schools have been included in the programme and we are expecting to see 1781 pupils.
