National first aid award for quick thinking Phoebe

Phoebe Bain was awarded a St John Ambulance Young First Aider of the Year Award for helping save the life of her mum Deborah. The 11 year old Chester King’s school pupil from Tiverton was presented with her award by The Countess of Wessex.

Phoebe was babysitting her younger brothers when she heard a crash outside. She rushed out of the house to find her mum had been crushed by her 4 x 4 car, that had rolled over her, and was unconcious on the floor. To her horror she also noticed that her mums car had rolled away on to the busy A49 at Beeston Brook.

Phoebe checked her mums vital signs then alerted traffic to the runaway car. She ran back into the house to call the emergency services and to get a blanket to keep her mum warm. She ran outside again, covered her mum with the blanket and called for help.

Phoebe received her first aid training through the local Injury Minimization Programme for schools, sponsored by St John
