Our I.M.P.S. trainer Lynnie was having a cup of coffee outside the Marks and Spencer café at the John Radcliffe Hospital recently when she noticed a member of staff sitting very still and obviously choking silently.
She ran over and administered back blows immediately. This dislodged the blockage and Lesley was able to breathe again.
Lesley said “Lynnie saved my life when I was choking, she was amazing. I keep dreaming and thinking what would have happened if Lynnie wasn’t around. She is my Guardian Angel. I cannot stress how important it is for everyone to be aware of life saving skills, don’t shy away from helping others, never be afraid to intervene whether it’s due to fear of hurting or not knowing what to do . Follow your instincts, every little helps even if you shout for help as time is of the essence.”
Lynnie said “I figured she was having trouble breathing and by now she was bent over in her chair.
I ran over and immediately gave her four hard back blows. Lesley coughed and sounding as if something had dislodged, eventually took a breath. I remember her scared eyes as she grabbed my hand looking shocked and relieved all at the same time.
Ironically, I also work as an IMPS trainer at the JR in the building opposite the café and in schools around the county teaching 10- & 11-year-olds what to do in an emergency, including choking!”
Scarily, both Lynnie and Lesley said that nobody was taking any notice of the incident – please make sure you are always aware of others around you – especially in a place where people are eating.
