Disaster strikes on a short bike ride

Carolyn has shared this story with us to reinforce the message about wearing a cycle helmet even for short journeys.

“I left my home at 08:55am on a Sunday morning to travel to church on my bike which is a 3 minute journey. In a rush as usual I wrapped the bike lock around the stem of the bike. 1 minute into the journey and the bike lock opened and got caught in the back wheel. As I was travelling at speed I went over the handlebars. The damage was to my eye and luckily no fracture of the cheek bone or jaw just heavy bruising. I had no helmet on!! I always do wear a helmet BUT I was only travelling for 3 mins to church on a Sunday morning. Great lesson here – you can be a very safe cyclist, no potholes or bad drivers to blame and still have an accident.
