Parliament debates water safety on school curriculum

On Monday 12th July 2021, the petitions committee debated the importance of increasing water safety content on the schools curriculum following an e petititon of over 107,000 signatures. You can watch the debate here

The petition says:

“As a country we see many water-related fatalities every year. We see many more call outs to water related incidents. Throughout lockdown year our coastguards were tasked to almost double the call outs than in the previous year.  Our children NEED to learn about cold water shock & rip currents.”

The petition was begun by Beckie Ramsey who tragically lost her son Dylan to drowning after he went wild swimming in a quarry.  Beckie has been a tireless water safety campaigner ever since and it will soon be the 10th anniversary of Dylan’s death.

I.M.P.S. has always included water safety in our resources and we always link with the RLSSUK  drowning prevention week.  We fully support the petition and call for children to be taught about cold water shock and rip tides.  We will also fully support the WHO world drowning prevention day on July 25th 2021.
